WARDOGS game: what it is, what it costs, and who it fits

WARDOGS is an online team shooter from developer BULKHEAD and publisher Team17, out on Steam Early Access for Windows since September 10, 2026. Its core mode is inspired by King of the Hill: up to 100 players in three teams fight over one randomized 2x2 km Control Zone on a 256 km² map, the team with the most players inside earns points, and the first team to 100 points wins. Is it worth it? Decide from these facts: scoring rewards holding the zone, not kills; money comes from teamplay such as revives, transport and spotting, so support play pays as well as shooting; every player starts with $10,000 of in-game cash, buys a fresh loadout each life, and keeps that cash between matches; and progression is deliberately slow — per the official Season 1 changelog, a median player sits around level 20 after 20–25 hours. It is still Early Access, and the developers themselves tell unsure players to wait or refund. On platforms and price: it is PC-only for now at $39.99 on US Steam ($49.99 for the Supporter Edition), with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions listed for 2028.

How a match works

Each life starts with shopping: you buy your loadout — weapons, gear, vehicles — then deploy. Points come from one thing only: having more players inside the Control Zone than the other teams. Kills earn cash but score no points. Inside the Control Zone sits a smaller, shifting Hot Zone: players standing in it count double toward their team's player count, and it pays double cash.

Cash and progression

Every player starts with $10,000 of in-game cash. You buy your loadout each life, and cash persists from match to match. Cash comes from teamplay actions — revives, transport, kills and spotting — not only kills, and players tip each other for rides and revives. Profits can be exchanged for Gold Bars, which buy cosmetics in the Gold Market. There is no battle pass and no pay-to-win, and BULKHEAD has stated that in-game cash and gold bars will never be sold.

Roles are not classes you pick from a menu: you define your role by what you buy, and you earn XP on role tracks — the patch notes name Career, Medic, Support, Recon, Driver and Pilot tracks. Progression is deliberately slow: per the Season 1 changelog, the developers tuned it so a median player at 20–25 hours sits around level 20, and the top items take a long grind.

What to do first

  1. Open the DEPLOY screen and pick your server. Update 0.1.2 (September 30, 2026) introduced this selection flow, listing Official, Community, Infantry Mode and Low-Level servers; the developers said it better surfaces the Infantry Mode and Low-Level community servers that already existed. Fan guides recommend Low-Level community servers for new players.
  2. Go where the Control Zone is and stay in it. Kills score no points — only having more players in the zone does — and the Hot Zone inside it counts double and pays double cash.
  3. Earn your first cash by keeping teammates alive and moving: revives and transport pay cash, and players tip each other for rides and revives.
  4. Never touch cash or XP exploits, and do not trade for real money. Per the Update 0.1.2 policy, abusing exploits or real-money trading resets your cash and progression and risks a permanent ban.

Playing with friends

WARDOGS has built-in proximity voice chat, so you can talk to players near you. It is an online-only PvP game that needs a broadband connection. When you press DEPLOY you can choose between Official, Community, Infantry Mode and Low-Level servers — a selection flow added in Update 0.1.2 to better surface the existing Infantry Mode and Low-Level community servers. Community servers are a real option, and BULKHEAD has named three approved hosting partners: QONZER, BisectHosting and xREALM.

What changed in Season 02

Season 02 (Update 0.2.0) went live on October 15, 2026. It added four weapons — the TCX Spear assault rifle, M14 DMR, PP-19 Bizon SMG and Evo-3 Ultra LMG — the Molotov, four vehicles (Wolf-110, Wolf-110 Assault, T-72 and Flakpanzer Gepard) and a rain weather preset. Per the Season 02 preview, a losing team at least 40 points behind second place gets a 20% vendor discount, and the preview said it applies to all teams; that one is from the preview only, not confirmed as current behaviour.
